Credit unions offer services like banks do, but there are some differences.

  • Credit unions are not-for-profit organizations. This means that any profit the organization earns beyond operating costs is returned to the members in the form of better interest rates, low or no fees, improved and expanded services and facilities. That’s why we can often offer higher interest rates on savings and lower rates on loans than banks can. The profit earned by banks is paid to owners and shareholders rather than to the bank’s customers.
  • Credit unions offer most of the same services that banks offer, but the services are named differently. A share draft account compares to a checking account, share certificates compare to certificates of deposit, and regular share accounts compare to savings accounts.
  • Many smaller credit unions offer only basic services. Loans to members are credit unions’ biggest investment, mostly home and auto loans. However, larger credit unions, such as United, provide full financial services including federally insured, interest-earning deposits, consumer loans, mortgage products, credit card services, and investments. Members of credit unions are provided the same products and services offered by a bank – and often at better rates and low or no fees and with superior member service.

Credit unions are democratically run and each member has one vote. Members elect the board of directors who represent the members for strategic decisions and planning within the credit union. So, when you join a credit union, you get a say in how the organization is operated.

Each credit union’s organizing charter defines who is eligible to become a member. Members have something in common, usually something like an employer or place of residence. Credit unions have a “field of membership,” and a common bond that members have to share. Fields of membership can be defined by place of employment, church membership, or residence in a community, to name just a few ways.

United Federal Credit Union uses encryption for online security. Encryption technology helps provide secure transmission of information along the Internet by encoding the transmitted data using a mathematical formula to scramble the data. Without a corresponding “decoder”, the transmission would look like nonsense text and would be unusable. Encryption technology can be used for a host of applications, including electronic commerce (sending credit card numbers for orders or transmitting account information), email messages and sensitive documents. Encryption is utilized with the transmission of data from one party to another. The sender encodes the data by scrambling it and then sends it on. The receiver must decode the data with the correct “decoder” in order to read and use it. The effectiveness (or level of security) for encryption is measured in terms of how long the key is – the longer the key, the longer it would take for someone without the correct “decoder” to break the code. The length of the key is measured in bits (e.g., 40-bit encryption, the level of encryption used with many ordinary browsers, versus 128-bit encryption, the level of encryption required to use this application).

There are several things you will need to refer to – and provide – during the account opening process:
